The Palette You Need in Your Bag: Urban Decay Shattered Face Case – Review and Swatches

Okay, so I said a while back that I would review this absolute beauty of a palette and it was only a fortnight ago that I felt ready. There is a little story behind this palette and why I wanted it so badly. Many moons ago when I was 15 or 16 I sat underneath my Christmas tree and unwrapped my presents from my Auntie. My Auntie always bought amazing presents, so I was a bit like ‘what is she giving me this for?’ when I opened up a box containing a Virgin Vie palette. I must say at the time I didn’t really wear all that much make-up : a quick slick of lip gloss and maybe some eye-shadow if I was going somewhere nice. My only palette at that time was from Pupa and was shaped like a teddy bear (I bought it in Tenerife when I was 12/ turning 13). Back when I was a child/teen I don’t think make-up was as big/as much the norm when you were young, so I didn’t wear it much. Anyway, after my Auntie explaining the make-up was to make me look nice in the shop I worked in at the time in case any nice boys came in, I cracked it open.

So this is what it looked like new (I stole the picture from Ebay). Mine (yes I still have it, I can’t part with it) no longer looks like this. I finished the powder, lost the puff and finished 3 or 4 lip glosses. The highlighter I decanted into a small tub and threw the bottom layer out. The palette came on many a night out and as such was in 3 pieces and held together with a hair bobble. The silver, grey and black shadows are empty, as are the 3 blushes on the right. The pink eye-shadow has almost hit pan, as has the orangey-bronze. Needless to say it was well loved., even after the initial scepticism And this is where Urban Decay comes into the mix. I needed a new ‘night out palette’ and the shattered face case fitted. So 8 years after receiving this one, I opened my parcels on Christmas day to receive a new beauty from my Auntie!

Packaging

This comes in a neat little box showing you the contents on the reverse. It is only when you take it out of the box that the full beauty is revealed. A ‘shattered’ looking  and very sturdy purple and silver case, which looks the part in any woman’s handbag. It is in 2 layers, the top housing the eye products and the bottom the face products. What I like the most is the inclusion of two full size and great quality mirrors. I mean we have all been there….doing the make up on the train/bus/taxi ride, or even at the bar. This is the perfect night out case! It is also pretty compact as you can see in the comparison to the naked basics palette. Bear in mind naked basics is the same size as a modern smart phone (sony xperia or htc one are what I have to compare). It is also very sturdy and snaps shut, so no pink or grey inners of the handbag!

Okay, so from the above paragraph or should I say essay from Urban Decay you get the idea of what’s inside.

I had never tried any of the eyeliners from Urban Decay, but upon opening this on Christmas day my mum informed me of how good they were. Yes, you read that right! My mum had tried Urban Decay eyeliners and I had not. Eyeliner is generally something I only wear at the weekends and even then not that often, but since getting this palette I have worn it every weekend. This is the softest eyeliner I have ever bought and as such is so easy to blend out. I love wearing this on my bottom lash line and on the lids smudged out for a smokey look. Normally the bf complains when I wear makeup, but after our 10mile bike ride on saturday I felt the need to put this on. As I knew I wouldn’t be leaving the house in the evening I didn’t bother with a base and he commented on how gorgeous my makeup was. Even he liked this eyeliner. It is a lovely black shade which is so easy to apply and smudge if that’s your thing. I love this so much that I’ve decided to but the set of 6 mini UD eyeliners come payday. This is a mini eyeliner, but I think it will last me for ages and when it runs out I can easily replace it. You can see how black it is in the swatch, perfect for smokey eyes. Also once you have this on it doesn’t budge! I have worn this to a hot, sweaty gig and it was still perfect. That’s without primer ladies. Expect a good 10 hours wear from this.

Lip Colour

Super saturated lip colour

Super saturated lip colour

Yay! I finally got a lip crayon. This full size lip crayon normally retails at £14 from House of Fraser. The colour of this one was quite difficult to capture, it’s a little bit of a murky rose pink and is called lovechild. How do UD come up with their names? Anyway this is really creamy and gives a lovely glossy finish but I found it a little drying. Laterly I have been applying a good coat of lip balm underneath this and it has helped massively. This really does not survive through eating or drinking, but you could get 3 hours wear from it if your not doing either of those. It applies easily and is fairly fool proof so if you are new to lip colour this could be a good one to try out. The colour is fairly safe and should suit most people, although if you are dark skinned it may not show up as well.

Eyeshadows

These are really the show stoppers in this palette, five super pigmented shades that will suit most skin tones.

From L-R Nameless, Remix, Shakedown

From L-R Nameless, Remix, Shakedown

Nameless is a medium grey with a bit of a brown undertone and is satin in finish. The texture is soft and I experienced no issues with fallout. Wear time was excellent with all of the shadows and this is probably my favourite shade in the palette.

Remix is a royal purple with tiny micro glitter. This one is not as soft as nameless, probably due to the glitter, but still a great formula. Excellent colour payoff and definitely one for the party season.

Shakedown is another satin, this time in gunmetal. I found the texture of this one to be a little drier than the other two, but it still applied well and I didn’t have very much fallout.

From L-R Nameless again, Minor Sin and Bleach

From L-R Nameless again, Minor Sin and Bleach

Minor Sin is a pink champagne shade with micro glitter and you could probably use this to highlight if you wanted. The shimmer is golden and the base colour has warm undertones, which I liked. Colour payoff is really good with this one and it has such a smooth texture. Another favourite. In fact I am wearing it right now!

Bleach is the only matte in this palette and is a yellowey beige. It reminded me of one of the shades from the basics palette, so I did a little comparison. As you can see it is similar to W.O.S but not the same. This one is very soft and as such a little bit prone to fallout. Still wears well, but is not as pigmented as the others. Makes a great all over shade.

Blush and Highlighter

In this palette are two shades of blush and one highlighter. They are all lovely powder offerings and are extremely pigmented, so a light hand is needed with them!

Overexposed Blush

Overexposed Blush

Overexposed is a matte dusky pink, which has coral undertones. This is my favourite blush in the palette and lasts on my skin for around 6 hours with no primer before it needs reapplying. Again it has a soft texture and can easily be blended out.

Temper blush and Glint highlighter

Temper blush and Glint highlighter

Temper has a little bit of shimmer and is a medium pink shade. I am not so much of a fan of this one as overexposed, but it is still nice. The texture is again lovely and smooth and can easily be blended. A little goes a long way with this one.

Glint s a frosty golden highlighter packed with shimmer. This is not great if you have enlarged pores like me as it accentuates them, but I have used this on the lids and it looked great. Payoff is great and the texture is soft, but not as soft as the blushes.

Price and Where to buy

The shattered face case is £30 and can be purchased from House of Fraser.

Final Thoughts

Overall I am in love with this palette, the only thing it is missing is a brush, but I guess if they included that it might get a bit bulky. The lasting power of all the items is great and they are all super pigmented. A big winner in my book. I would recommend this to anyone looking for something small to chuck in their handbag.

What is your go to palette? Would you use this one?

  1. Woooow that is the dreamiest palette ever! I love that it has two layers and includes face things as well. There are not enough good quality multi-taskers like that in this world. Massive props to your auntie! Very jealous of this one xx

    • My auntie is amazing isn’t she? I love it. And yeah it’s great having everything I need except a foundation and mascara, let’s face it they are never that great in palettes anyway. There’s another case similar to this called anarchy and I’m tempted to buy it too. I was literally about to send you a message on Twitter asking if you have heard of or been to imats? Xx

      Like

      • No imats is new to me! Qu’est-ce que c’est? Yes, brilliant auntie points for her. I agree, the foundations you find in palettes are never quite right. I like the Benefit ones but they always include Some Kinda Gorgeous, and that’s too oily for me. Will definitely go and check out Anarchy now if it’s not limited! xx

        • It’s a makeup show in London and I was wondering if you had been. I’m planning to go this year, tickets are pricey but apparently there’s good discounts. Better start saving. I think anarchy is limited actually as I can’t find it anywhere, but debenhams had loads when I was in last xx

          • Oooh that’s so cool! Just had a look at the website, trying to work out how much you’d have to buy to make up £40 worth of discounts haha. It does look like amazing fun though. If my sister won’t come to Mcbusted in Ipswich, I’m gonna try and drag her to this haha xx

            Like

            • Your so lucky having a sister to drag to things. Haha mcbusted, would secretly like to go, but too ashamed. Nars is 60% discounted, so assuming you only buy nars, you would need to buy 70 quid of products, which at the 60% discount would cost 28quid. Had a look around at people’s hauls from last year and that would equal a blush and a palette or similar. I’m such a geek aren’t I? Haha.

            • A very helpful geek! I love it when you get in on the maths, it’s really useful knowing the figures but I never have the patience or skill to work them out. Speaking of, I had a look at my stats again and there was yet more search engine strangeness. “Wearing pig snout during sex” being the weirdest. I feel a bit violated. A blush and a palette is reasonable 🙂 thanks for working it out xx

            • Ewww why would someone even Google that? And how on earth did you come up? People are freaks.
Apparently nyx did a 30% off deal last year too! And illamasqua had loads of thing for a fiver and foundations for 7.50. Bah need to start saving. I’m totally going to this. Xx

              Like

            • Corrrrr those are good deals! Especially for Illamasqua (I still love saying the name haha). As always I can work out how they got to my blog but have no idea why they searched that term in the first place! On the Harry Potter Studios post my sister and I are pretending to say “pig snout!” to get past the Fat Lady, and no doubt I’ve said “wearing” and “sexy!” a few times on the blog more generally. Still an alarming search term though. Ahhh if you go it would be so good to see a post! I can’t decideee xx

            • Yeah I know, there’s all these amazing brands I would never normally buy because of the price for cheap. Aah.
It’s very worrying that someone searched that. I haven’t looked at my search terms in a while…. Scared now. Xx

  2. Aww, I love that story of your auntie introducing you to make up! This pallete is so nice inside and out! I love the super saturated lip crayon I have one from a limited edition pallete too but it’s a deep red. The overexposed blush looks gorgeous I might have to look into if they sell that separately or if it’s pallete exclusive!

    Like

    • I looked for the blush separately but couldn’t find it and it said the formula was exclusive to this. I’ve seen them release exclusives before. I love the lip crayon but it was a little bit drying on me without a balm underneath. I plan on picking up a few more though

      • I got a mini set (probably the one you were talking about) it has a black, brown, purple, and a few other neutral colors. I also have some from my urban decay wizard of oz palettes. I have 2 full sized ones too. I wear eyeliner every time I do my makeup so I really love them.

        Like

        • Yeah that sounds like the mini set I want. I think i will just buy it, its reduced to £18, which for 6 eyeliners is a really good deal. Can you get barry m in the states? I had a really good pink eyeliner from there (pink isn’t an everyday colour, fancy dress or nights out)

            • Ah sorry Im using the app on my phone and it replied to someone else’s comment on your comment.
So here’s take two….. It’s pretty good drugstore brand and I used to have a few nail polishes but they went thick and gloopy. Sorry about that, not sure why the app is playing up!

            • Oh yeah that’s fine! I’ve done that before lol! I always use my phone too. Sounds like a good brand. I just got this new polish that is scented. It’s by revlon. It’s an interesting concept but it chipped after 2 days!

            • I think there must be a bug in the android app cos it happened to me before too. Oh I’ve scene those on blogs, I like the idea, but the smell means you can’t top coat?

            • I got one that was supposed to smell like the beach and it was very faint and almost hardly noticeable. Kind of pointless. I have an iPhone and the app is always acting up, but is getting better. I’m going to get an android phone after I can get a new phone.

              Like

            • I love my android, but yeah the app isn’t great. They did an update last week which helped. I have two scented ones from models own and found a similar problem with them not really smelling of much.

            • I hate that I can’t personalize anything with my apple phone. It’s very standard. It’s user friendly, but I’m planning on switching this coming summer so hopefully they will improve the app by then :P. I wish I could send you some of my julep polishes (I have so many that I haven’t even tried). Also some from Drew Barrymores collection. Did you find anything out on your google search?

            • Awh thanks for thinking of me. I had a look and it’s basically to do with nail polish being flammable and this can cause a problem in planes. Bit stupid cos I’ve bought nail polish at duty free and taken it on a plane. Still trying to find anyone that will ship it out of the UK to the states. There’s bound to be a way.
I love android, there’s so many more free apps than Apple and it’s just generally a nice system to use
