Drugstore Makeup TAG|theLittleScottishCorner

drugstore makeup tag|theLittleScottishCorner

I was tagged a couple of weeks ago by the lovely Beth over at Polished Couture to do this TAG and I thought it looked like a lot of fun! I don’t have a massive selection of make-up, but it is growing and I seem to have a lot of things I have seen on other blogs. Hmm! So let’s get on with the TAG shall we?

Here are my favourites:

Foundation

This has to be the Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse. I used this years ago and repurchased a couple of months ago and can’t believe how light and flawless it is. Definitely not a foundation for when you need full coverage, but if you want a no make-up day it is worth a look. It just feels so light on my skin and leaves my skin looking flawless, but lets some of my freckles shine through so it looks totally natural. I have the shade sand, which is not quite right for me. It does blend really easily, so if you by one too dark/light it is not a massive issue.

Concealer

I have mixed feelings about this concealer, but part of it is the shade choice I think? I ordered the Rimmel Wake Me Up concealer from ASOS when it was reduced to £3.60 and from a quick look at the provided swatches the shade 040 soft beige seemed a nice match. Reality hit when I got the concealer and it is in fact pretty orange based and far too dark for me. I read some other reviews that even the lighter shades are orange? I have been trying it out on the days when I don’t need to go anywhere and the coverage for dark circles is amazing. It is so creamy and the brightening effect is fabulous. I’m going to try and get my hands on a different shade of this and see if it matches my skin better.

Base Products

Powder

I haven’t actually included a photo of a powder as it has been so long since I have used a drugstore powder. I usually stick to BareMinerals Mineral Veil, which has been a staple of mine for years. I used to use Rimmel clear complexion powder, but it had the tendency to smash in my bag 😦 which isn’t ideal. I’ve recently purchased the Rimmel Stay Matte in translucent, so we will see how it fares.

Primer

I decided to include a primer in this TAG as I feel it is essential. I got the Maybelline Baby skin a few months ago and although I don’t like it as much as the Porefessional from Benefit, for a budget primer it is really nice. It definitely reduces my pores and helps keep makeup locked in place for longer. It’s only a third of the price of the Porefessional too!

Bronzer

I’ve stopped using bronzer for a while, I’m more into blusher just now. Instead of  a bronzer, I am including this gorgeous blush from Sleek in the shade Coral. This blusher is quite dark and a bit bronze based, so I figure I can get away with it. The blush is really pigmented and blends out so easily, I am in love. I want to collect the entire shade range.

Blush

This has to be another Sleek blush of course! I’ve chosen the Blush by 3 palette in Pumpkin, which looks a little scary. I literally just touch my brush on the pan and I have enough product to do my cheek. The colours are very vivid and can be built up for a statement of colour, but I prefer just giving myself a wash of colour. I didn’t think I would like this palette, but surprisingly I do.

Cheek Products

Another strong contender has to be the Maybelline Dream Creamy blush in the shade peach. It looks really natural on the cheeks and blends so easily. The texture is just so smooth and creamy and I think I am in love.

Highlight

It’s no secret that I am not a huge highlighter fan and I don’t actually own any drugstore highlighters. I must rectify this. In the meantime, I have included Benefit’s Sunbeam. This bronze-gold highlighter is very subtle and works well with my skin tone. The application I initially found a little strange, but once you get used to it the brush works well.

Eyeshadow

This one I have had for years and rarely use anymore. You can’t even buy this anymore, but it is a quad from No.7. I got this for Christmas from one of my best friends from school, who has now emigrated to South Africa 😦 . I guess you could say I have an emotional attachment to this? The purples went well with my eyes and the sparkle was perfect for a night out. Fall-out was an issue, but the brush was surprisingly good quality.

I’ve also included a new found love in the form of Maybelline Colour Tattoo in permanent taupe. I used to love the Maybelline mousse shadows, so it is only fitting that I love these too. The staying power is great and application is a dream.

Eye Products

Eyeliner

These eyeliners are still on sale in the drugstore, just with a little jazzier packaging. I used to have a black one too, but it has run out. Oh yes, it is the Rimmel Soft Kohl Kajal Eye Pencil. The white is great for those hungover days when you need to brighten your eyes (those days are few and far between now!) and the lilac used to be my colour of choice for above my upper lashline. These are great for the money, really soft and pigmented. Does anyone care to explain what Kajal means?

Mascara

Soap and Glory is at the higher end of drugstore and this is the first piece of makeup I have tried from them. I got this mascara as part of a gift set, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have purchased it. The brush is great and the formula is quite nice to work with – not too wet and not too dry. It isn’t the blackest of black, but it does seem to stay on my lashes well.

Lipstick/Lip Balm

I’ve included a lip crayon, lip gloss and lip balm here.  First up is this lovely lip crayon from Ted Baker. It is a gorgeous shade of pink and it wears really well on my lips before fading.

I am absolutely gutted that this is my last Nivea Care Gloss as they don’t make these any more. I stocked up in Boots a few years ago when they were on offer after Christmas. This is a gloss with a  difference – it is not sticky and actually cares for your lips. My favourite colour was the peach one as it looked so natural, but I like the red too. I might have to ration myself on this one.

Finally this lip balm from the Bodyshop. The honey version isn’t my favourite, but I have told myself I must finish it before opening the mango one. The bodyshop lip balms smell delicious, but this one is a little drying. There are so many flavours available and they are often on offer.

Lips and Nails

Nail Polish

This wan’t in the original TAG, but I had to include it! I am a nail polish hoarder, fiend, demon, collector – whatever you want to call it. I’ve recently rediscovered Orly nail polish. These are available for £5 in Boots and the two colours I am loving right now are very in season. The gorgeous Lemonade which I used in my Easter Manicure and Blue Belle. Blue Belle is special to me as it was bought for me by my other half. He normally complain that he prefers my natural nails, but one day went out and bought me this lovely shade.

I TAG:

Kavi

Tarika

Effie

Brittany

  1. I’ve used the Rimmel Wake Me Up foundation in the past and ended up having to get the shade Ivory in order to match my skin tone. And although I’m pale and have fair skin, I wouldn’t really class myself as being Ivory. I’m looking for a good concealer though, so I might give it a go. I’m also loving mousse foundations at the moment so I might try the Maybelline one at some point. Great post! xxx

    • I think after looking at swatches I could definitely do with a few shades lighter. It’s quite Orange based this concealer, but I do like the coverage so would say it’s worth an investigation. I’ve seen a few people say the shades run dark too. The mousse foundation is lovely for a bit of light coverage. I wouldn’t use it every day, but now and again it makes an appearance. I used it in my get ready with me post on Sunday, which shows the coverage with it. My other half likes it because it looks very natural. Best part is its so cheap! Xx

      • I think I’ll have to give the concealer a go, I desperately need a decent under eye concealer and nothing I’ve tried so far has had muh effect. I totally look like a panda at the moment my dark circles are so bad! xx

        • If your willing to splash the cash, benefit fake up is amazing. It’s not the best coverage, it’s fine for spots but you can still see a bit of dark circle through it, but it lasts well and doesn’t crease. It is pricey though at 18 a tube. I’ve heard collection is very good, but it’s always sold out when I go to buy it xx

          • I might try the benefit one, I’m lucky in the fact that my mum works at Debenhams and can often get her staff discount on the benefit stuff, and my birthday is coming up, so she might buy it for me. I’m definitely willing to spend the money the way my dark circles are at the moment! xxx

  2. I haven’t done this tag, but I have used a few of the things you’ve mentioned!
I don’t particularly like the Body shop honey lip balm either, it never really did anything for my lips. I use their ‘Born Lippy’ at the moment which smell amazing. As for powder I use the E.L.F. High Definition powder, it’s white but it apply translucent so it doesn’t matter what shade of foundation you use. I discovered it a couple of years ago and is by far the best drug store powder I have ever used. 😀
I’m in a bronzer mood at the moment, although I don’t know how you managed to convince yourself to use the orange ‘pumpkin’ blush, it does look terrifying!

I love reading your posts too much haha… look at my essay/comment. x

    • Firstly, I’m so touched everytime you leave me a comment. It makes my day. That’s so sweet of you.
The Orange blush does look terrifying, but honestly when you just tap the brush lightly in it and sweep over the cheeks it gives a lovely glow. Took me a few times to get right, but I’ve perfected it! My favourite bodyshop lip product has to be the mango butter, but I’m not allowed to start it until I finish this honey one. I love the smell of the honey one. It’s lush. I still haven’t tried anything from elf, I think it’s the whole online only thing. I really need to get my bum in gear and try it. You should do the tag, I would love to read it :-)let me know if you do it xx

      • Aww you are so lovely! =^_^= I must admit I’ve not tried the mango one… I have the chocolate set from xmas that I still haven’t gotten round to using. I’m loving their water melon lip balm at the moment. *drools*
Elf can be a bit daunting, I must admit I’ve not splashed out and bought any of their high end things, but they’re pretty cheap so I’m not too fussed if what I get isn’t brilliant, although I’d avoid their eyeshadow primer as its just thick and clumps in the bottle after like a week, but other than that I’ve had pretty good experiences with them 🙂
I might try the tag tomorrow, I will let you know :0) Thank you! xx

        • The mango one is really nice, I love it. I love their body butter too, I’ve just got a raspberry one so I’m quite excited to try that. I bet the chocolate is awesome, although it would make me want chocolate all the time!
Yeah I guess with elf if you don’t like it, no big deal as its so cheap. I keep meaning to try their stuff. I kind of go through phases of hoarding stuff from a particular brand and then moving on to the next brand. I really want to try makeup revolution which is a bit like elf and mua I guess. You should do the tag! It sounds like you would have some good answers and recommendations for me 🙂 Xx

  3. I use the lightest shade of Rimmel Wake Me Up Foundation, and do find it can be orange-toned sometimes – especially over a patch of dry skin! But… Blended in properly and evenly applied, it’s really a great medium-coverage foundation that gives a lovely dewy, glittery effect! 🙂 Definitely going to give the concealer a go when I get my hands on it!

    • The concealer is lovely, it’s so creamy and it does blend quite easily. I probably should have looked at actual swatches before I ordered based on the little picture on asos. Lesson learned. I want to pick the foundation up too, so I think I will get a new concealer then too. Plus three for two in boots! Yay!

    • I used to be a bronzer girl, but I looked Orange in some photos from too much and it put me off. I discovered blushes a couple of years ago and can’t get over how healthy they make me look. You should try out sleek for blush, they are amazing. Xx
